🏋️ PRESSURE IN THE DEEP OCEAN
TOPIC 17 · OCEANS · SURFACE · 10M RULE · DEEP · HULLS · LIFE
PAGE 1 OF 5, WATER HAS WEIGHT
SQUEEZE
Comic diver descending through blue water with pressure arrows pressing from all sides
THE DEEPER YOU GO, THE HARDER THE SQUEEZE
Water is heavy. When you dive, all the water above you presses from every side. Scientists call that force pressure. At the surface, the air already presses with about one atmosphere. Underwater, each deeper layer adds more weight. That is why ears can hurt on a deep swim, and why the deep ocean feels crushing to us. Pressure is one of the biggest challenges of exploring the deep.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
Pressure in the ocean pushes from all directions, not only from above. That is why deep divers feel a full-body squeeze.
PRESS!
AIR
Comic child standing at sea level with light air pressure shown as soft arrows
🌤️ At sea level, air pressure is about one atmosphere all around you.
⚖️ That amount is the starting point scientists use for ocean pressure talk.
WATER
Comic stack of water layers pressing down harder as depth increases
💧 Water is much denser than air, so a short column of water weighs a lot.
📉 That is why pressure climbs so fast as you go only a little deeper.
