PAGE 1 OF 5, THE DEEPEST DIVE ON EARTH
DEEPEST
Comic cutaway of the Mariana Trench plunging into black Pacific water deeper than a tall mountain
A CRACK DEEPER THAN ANY MOUNTAIN IS TALL
Far under the Pacific Ocean sits the Mariana Trench, the deepest known place on Earth. Its lowest spot is called Challenger Deep. Scientists measure it at about 10,935 metres down, nearly 11 kilometres deep. That is deeper than Mount Everest is tall if you stood the mountain upside down in the sea. Sunlight never reaches that far. The water there is icy and almost pitch black.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
If you stacked Everest on the seafloor at Challenger Deep, its tip would still sit under more than a kilometre of water.
