WILLIAM HERSCHEL'S LUCKY NIGHT
On March 13, 1781, German-born British astronomer William Herschel was surveying stars with his telescope. He noticed a faint object that moved night to night, proving it was not a distant star. It orbited beyond Saturn. Herschel first thought it might be a comet, but calculations showed a nearly circular planet orbit. Uranus doubled the known width of the solar system at the time. It can sometimes be seen without a telescope if you know where to look.

PREDICTED BEFORE SEEN
By the 1800s, Uranus did not follow its expected orbit exactly. French mathematician Urbain Le Verrier and British mathematician John Couch Adams independently calculated where another planet's gravity might be tugging it. Le Verrier sent coordinates to Berlin Observatory. On September 23, 1846, astronomer Johann Galle found Neptune within a degree of the predicted spot. It was a triumph of math guiding the telescope.

CLYDE TOMBAUGH'S PATIENCE
In the early 1900s, astronomers searched for a Planet X beyond Neptune. At Lowell Observatory in Arizona, Clyde Tombaugh compared pairs of sky photos on a blink comparator, looking for a dot that jumped. On February 18, 1930, he found Pluto. Tombaugh was 24 years old and had grown up on a farm with no college degree yet. Pluto was hailed as the ninth planet until 2006, when it was reclassified as a dwarf planet after more icy worlds were found nearby.
