Neptune is the eighth and farthest major planet from the Sun. Sunlight is weak out there, yet Neptune is a stormy, active world. Its deep blue color comes from methane in the atmosphere, which absorbs red light. Neptune is an ice giant like Uranus, with hydrogen and helium on top and icy materials deeper down. It was the only planet found by math before it was seen through a telescope in 1846.

TRITON ORBITS THE WRONG WAY
Neptune's largest moon Triton is one of the coldest objects in the solar system and orbits backward compared with Neptune's spin. That is a clue it may have been captured from the Kuiper belt long ago. Triton has geysers that shoot nitrogen ice and dust into space. In billions of years, tides may pull Triton so close that it breaks apart, possibly forming a future ring.
