A BELT OF LEFTOVERS
Between Mars and Jupiter stretches a wide zone filled with rocky asteroids. These are not pieces of a planet that exploded. They are leftover building blocks from when the solar system formed. Small chunks never grew big enough to become a full planet. Instead they drift in a loose ring, orbiting the Sun together. From far away the belt looks crowded in movies, but space is huge and asteroids are usually very far apart.

WHY NO PLANET GREW
Jupiter is so massive that its gravity shakes nearby orbits. In the asteroid zone, that meant rocky pieces kept getting pulled and bumped instead of calmly sticking together. Planet formation needs gentle collisions that build bigger and bigger bodies. Jupiter's tug made that hard. Scientists think a Mars-sized planet might have formed there without the giant nearby. Instead we got millions of smaller worlds sharing the same orbital neighborhood.

THE BIGGEST BELT BODY
The largest object in the asteroid belt is Ceres. It is round enough to count as a dwarf planet, not just a jagged rock. Ceres is about 940 kilometres wide and holds roughly a third of the belt's total mass. NASA's Dawn spacecraft orbited Ceres and found bright salt deposits and ice beneath the surface. Studying Ceres helps scientists understand what the early solar system was made of before planets finished forming.

ROCKS FROM THE BEGINNING
Asteroids are time capsules. Many have changed little since the solar system was young. By studying their minerals, scientists learn what dust and rock were available when Earth formed. Some meteorites on Earth came from the belt. Space missions have returned samples too. Future visits may bring more. Mining metals in space is a real idea for grown-up engineers, but for science the belt is priceless because it stores the solar system's early recipe.
