WHEN PLANTS FIRST STEPPED ONTO LAND
Roughly 470 million years ago, simple plants began colonising bare rock and damp soil. These pioneers had no roots at all. Instead, their green stems and leaves soaked up water and minerals from rain and thin films of moisture wherever they touched the surface. They were small, often just a few centimetres tall, but they changed Earth forever by bringing photosynthesis onto dry ground for the first time.

RHIZOIDS: HAIR-LIKE HOLDING STRANDS
The next step was not a full root, but rhizoids: thin, hair-like threads growing from the lower parts of early plants. Rhizoids clung to soil and rock, helping plants stay upright in wind and rain. They also absorbed a little water and dissolved minerals. Fossils from Scotland's Rhynie chert, about 407 million years old, show rhizoids clearly on plants like Aglaophyton. Rhizoids did important jobs, but they are not the same as the branched root systems trees use today.

During the Devonian period, roughly 416 to 360 million years ago, plants evolved true roots: organs with a growing tip, a protective root cap, and the ability to branch underground. Scientists think roots evolved step by step and independently in several plant groups, not all at once in a single ancestor. True roots let plants anchor firmly, mine water from deeper soil, and grow much taller than their rootless ancestors. This upgrade helped forests spread across continents.

Even before true roots existed, land plants partnered with fungi in relationships called mycorrhizae (from Greek words meaning "fungus" and "root"). The fungus threads spread through soil and reach nutrients, especially phosphorus, that plant cells struggle to grab alone. The plant pays with sugars from photosynthesis. Fossils show this partnership in 407-million-year-old Aglaophyton, which had no roots but still hosted fungi inside its stems. Today, most land plants, including forest trees, rely on mycorrhizae.
