WHEN PLANTS FIRST STEPPED ASHORE
Long before dinosaurs or flowers, tiny plant pioneers crept onto bare rock and mud. Fossil spores from about 470 million years ago mark the earliest known land flora, and scientists link them to moss-like bryophytes. Mosses never grew into towering trees, yet they survived ice ages, droughts, and every major extinction since. Today they carpet forest floors, cling to rooftops, and even thrive in Antarctica after the snow melts.

WHAT MAKES A MOSS A MOSS?
Mosses belong to the bryophytes, a group of land plants that never evolved xylem and phloem, the water-and-sugar pipes inside trees and flowers. Without those tubes, mosses cannot pump water to great heights. The green leafy plant you notice is the gametophyte, the main living stage. A short stalk tipped with a spore capsule is the sporophyte, which depends on the gametophyte for food. Mosses reproduce with spores, not seeds, and sperm must swim through a film of water to reach eggs.

LIVING WITHOUT VASCULAR TISSUE
A tree pulls water from deep roots through xylem tubes. A moss has none of that. Water enters through the leaf surface and moves by diffusion, hopping from one wet cell to the next. That works only for a few centimetres, which is why mosses stay low and hug the ground. After rain, a dried-out patch can turn bright green within minutes. In hot sun it may shut down and wait, sometimes reviving years later when moisture returns.

PEAT MOSS BUILDS A CARBON BANK
Sphagnum, often called peat moss, dominates cool, soggy peat bogs across the Northern Hemisphere. Its hollow cells can hold many times their own weight in water, keeping the bog wet and acidic. Dead sphagnum sinks into layers of peat where oxygen is scarce and decay nearly stops. Peatlands cover only about 3% of Earth's land, yet they store roughly as much carbon as all the world's forests combined, locked away for thousands of years.

When peat bogs are drained or burned, ancient carbon can rush back into the atmosphere as CO₂. Protecting sphagnum peatlands helps fight climate change.
