Motivation is the force that gets you moving toward a goal. Psychologists split it into two main types.
Intrinsic motivation comes from inside: you do something because it feels fun, meaningful, or satisfying on its own.
Extrinsic motivation comes from outside rewards like money, grades, praise, or prizes. Both can push you forward, but they work differently in your brain. Intrinsic drive often lasts longer and feels richer. Extrinsic rewards can help short-term, but they sometimes backfire on creative or enjoyable tasks.

Paying people for creative work often makes them worse at it. When an activity you already love becomes a job for pay, your brain may start treating it like a chore instead of a joy.
