Addiction is when a person keeps using something or doing a behavior even when it causes serious harm. For a long time, people blamed addiction on weak willpower or bad choices. Scientists now know that is mostly wrong. Addiction is a
brain condition that hijacks the
dopamine reward system, the same circuits that help you enjoy food, friendship, and fun. Dopamine is a brain chemical that signals "that felt good, do it again." Drugs, alcohol, gambling, and even endless scrolling can flood this system so powerfully that normal pleasures start to feel flat. This is biology, not a moral failure.

In 1954, researchers James Olds and Peter Milner found that rats would press a lever hundreds of times to stimulate a "pleasure center" in the brain. That discovery helped prove that reward is wired into specific brain circuits.
