Attention is how your brain picks what to notice right now. Psychologist William James called it taking hold of one thing in a world full of sights and sounds. Think of it like a
spotlight: you can shine it brightly on one spot, but not everywhere at once. Attention is a
finite resource, meaning you only have so much to spend at a time. When you focus hard on homework, you have less left for side chatter or background noise. That is normal brain design, not a personal flaw.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
James wrote in 1890 that everyone knows what attention is, but it is very hard to define. Scientists still study how the brain selects, filters, and switches what we notice.
