⚽ THE FALSE NINE
TOPIC 03 · SPORTS · FOOTBALL · TACTICS
PAGE 1 OF 5 — NOT YOUR NORMAL STRIKER
THE DROP
A centre-forward dropping deep into midfield while a centre-back follows, leaving a gap behind the defence
THE STRIKER WHO GOES BACKWARD
A false nine is a centre-forward who refuses to stay near the goal. Instead of waiting in the penalty box for crosses, this player drops deep into midfield to receive the ball at their feet. The name sounds strange, but it makes sense: a normal number nine lives up front, while a false nine pretends to be a striker and then pulls back into space. The moment they drop, something clever happens. The centre-back who is supposed to mark them has a choice: stay near the goal and let the false nine have the ball, or follow them out of the defensive line. Most defenders follow, and that is exactly what the attacking team wants.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
The false nine works best with a small, quick, technical player who is brilliant with the ball at their feet, not a tall target man who wins headers near the goal.
