During World War I, armies dug trench lines across France and Belgium. Machine guns and barbed wire turned open fields into deadly traps. Ordinary trucks and cars sank in deep mud after rain. Commanders needed a new machine that could cross ditches, crush wire, and carry a protected gun crew. Engineers in Britain began testing a strange armoured box on caterpillar tracks like a farm tractor. That idea became the tank.
