Science buddy, grab a grown-up before you open vinegar or move liquids. Work on a tray or cookie sheet so nothing stains the table. This comic explains why the bubbles happen.

SOUR VS SOAPY
Chemists sort many liquids into two rival clubs: acids taste sour (think citrus and vinegar) and bases feel slippery in water and love to react with acids. Baking soda is a classic household base, a fine white powder that dissolves in water. Vinegar is mostly water plus acetic acid. When acid particles crash into base particles, they rearrange like puzzle pieces and often release a gas. In your volcano, that gas is carbon dioxide, the same fizz-maker in soda pop.

TRAY FIRST, MOUNTAIN SECOND
Slide a rimmed baking tray under everything: lava goes sideways when it is excited. Place a narrow bottle or jar in the middle; that is your magma chamber. Wrap cardboard, papier-mâché, or modeling clay around it to sculpt ridges, and leave the bottle opening clear at the crater. Tape helps, but neatness is not the goal. You want sealed walls that will not leak downward. When you are ready, spoon baking soda into the bottle (about a tablespoon is plenty for a first test).

CARBON DIOXIDE ESCAPE POD
When vinegar floods the baking soda, hydrogen ions from the acid meet bicarbonate from the base. Together they form carbonic acid, which instantly falls apart into water and carbon dioxide gas. Those CO₂ molecules rush out so fast they churn the liquid into furious bubbles. Add soap and the bubbles stick together into creamy foam that pours over the rim like neon lava. More vinegar speeds leftovers; more soda leaves extra base for round two.

LAB RULES AT HOME
RESPECT THE SPLASH ZONE
Vinegar vapor can tickle your nose, so work in a ventilated kitchen. Never aim your face over the crater when pouring. If foam touches skin, rinse with water: it is weak acid and base chemistry, but still worth washing off. Keep pets back, because curious tongues do not need a vinegar surprise. Real volcanoes run on magma and plate tectonics, not baking soda, but the idea of pressure forcing material upward is a fun metaphor. Document each trial, for example “2 tsp soda + ¼ cup vinegar = foam height ___ cm.”

Leftover liquid is mostly salty water with a vinegary whiff. Pour it down the sink with running water (check with your adult if your pipes are delicate). Rinse the bottle for another round tomorrow. You proved that acids and bases trade atoms to release CO₂. The same family of reactions happens in bread dough, antacid tablets, and even deep rocks cycling carbon on Earth. Next upgrade: compare lemon juice vs vinegar, or measure foam height with a ruler. Same volcano, smarter questions.
