FOUR TEENAGERS FOUND A LOST WORLD
In a forest near Montignac, France, four teenage boys were exploring when their dog vanished down a hole left by a fallen tree. They squeezed into the narrow gap and dropped into a black cavern. When they raised their lamp, the walls exploded with colour: giant bulls, leaping horses, and herds of deer, painted thousands of years before. No human eyes had seen them for 17,000 years.

A STONE AGE MASTERPIECE GALLERY
Lascaux holds nearly 600 painted animals and almost 1,500 engravings. The most famous room is the Hall of the Bulls, where huge wild cattle called aurochs charge across the ceiling. One bull stretches over 5 metres long, the largest animal in all of cave art. The artists used the bumps and curves of the rock to make the animals look alive, as if they could leap off the wall.

THE ARTISTS AT WORK
THEY MIXED PAINT AND SPRAYED IT
These artists were clever chemists. They ground coloured rocks into fine powder, then mixed it with water or animal fat to make paint. They brushed it on with pads of moss and frayed sticks, dabbed it with fingers, and even blew it through hollow bones to spray a soft, airbrushed shadow. Working by flickering firelight, deep underground, they planned each animal with real artistic skill.

Blowing paint through a bone tube is the world's oldest spray-painting technique. Artists still use a similar idea today with airbrushes and stencils.

The deepest part of Lascaux holds its strangest picture: a bird-headed man falling beside a wounded bison. Why paint it in such a hard-to-reach spot? Experts have ideas but no certain answer. Some think the art was hunting magic, to bring good luck. Some think it was a spiritual ritual led by a shaman. Some even think the dots above the animals map the stars. The mystery is part of what makes Lascaux so amazing.

THE LEGACY
LOVED TO DEATH, THEN REBORN
After it opened to the public, over a thousand visitors came every day. But their breath filled the cave with carbon dioxide, and warmth brought green algae and white crystals that began eating the ancient art. To save it, France closed the real cave in 1963. Then artists built exact copies: Lascaux II, and later Lascaux IV, painted by hand to match every line. Now everyone can visit the wonder without harming the original.
