Magnets can attract or repel without touching. That is a non-contact force, like gravity, but it mainly affects certain materials such as iron, nickel, and cobalt. Every magnet has two poles, often called north and south. You cannot isolate a single pole by snapping a bar magnet. Each piece still has both.
