Momentum tells you how hard it is to stop a moving object. In simple form, momentum is mass times velocity. A heavy bowling ball creeping slowly can still be tough to stop. A light tennis ball needs much more speed to feel the same. More mass or more speed means more momentum.

WHEN THINGS BUMP
In a collision, objects can transfer momentum. A cue ball hits a snooker ball and sends it rolling while the cue ball slows or deflects. If you ignore outside forces for a moment, total momentum of the system is conserved. Real tables have friction, so balls eventually stop. The bump still shows momentum moving from one object to another.
